As George Carlin said, "It's called the American Dream, 'cause you have to be asleep to believe it."
ReplyDeleteDuring the Great Inflation of the 1970's, an industrial manager remarked, "We pay people $50 an hour to make steel, which we pay other people $35 to make into cars. The problem is that we're counting on people who make $5 an hour to buy them." The USW and UAW members who used to work at the Ford plant, the steel mill and the shipyard in the NPR article priced their products out of the market and now regard themselves as victims. Even you, Nando, regard yourself as a victim on account of that crushing student debt. But, you took on that debt mainly to help yourself, didn't you? Weren't you trying to get a six-figure income by joining a profession whose members price their services far above the means of the average citizen? The high price of legal representation means that the legal profession basically auctions access to legal rights. You cannot expect sympathy from the losers in that auction no matter how much money you borrowed.
